Many of the provisions of the dowry in Islam andin many other religions have changed due to the infiltration of cultures. Most European countriestoday, does not require a dowry at marriage whether the dowry to the husband orfor him. As well as some Asian countries banned dowry and set penalties forthose who demand dowry during the marriage because of the resulting problems andissues in the community. Because the dowry is still dealing in the Muslimcommunity I will focus on how the dowry in the past and now, and what are theresulting problems caused by this changes. In the past, brides family requesteda small amount of money and the costs of marriage wedding even if it isexpensive the father never ask the groom to pay more. Actually before 20 yearsfrom now the groom gave the brides families household instead of the money. Nowthe case has changed dramatically. The bride’s father doesn’t ask for a hugeamount of money but he also require to pay for all expenses of marriage. Thiscaused the inability of young people to marry women from the Gulf and then ledthem to marry a young Arab women or from any other nationality, and at the endthe spinsterhood abounded in the Gulf countries.
My presentation is dividedin to three parts. First, I am going to talk about what does dowry mean?? Second, I am going to talk about the history of the dowry. Final point is whatproblems can dowry causes in the society??
Let’s begin with the first point which is what does dowrymean??
A dowry is the money, goods, or estate that a woman brings to her husband in marriage. It contrastswithbrideprice, which is paid tothe bride's parents, anddower, which isproperty settled on the bride herself by the groom at the time of marriage. Dowry is an ancient custom, and its existence may well predate records of it. In certain societies the dowry formeda part of an exchange of wealth between intermarrying families. The dowry mayalso serve as insurance against bad treatment of the wife by the husband; itmust be forfeited to the wife or wife's family in case of divorce. The wife maynot deprive the husband of its control, and he, on the other hand, is bound toprotect the property that he receives asdowry.
